Sleeping night
The carer rests or sleeps in the home and is available for an agreed, limited number of interruptions during the night.
Waking night
The carer stays awake and available throughout the agreed night period.
Live-in care

Visiting care, live-in care and a care home

Different arrangements suit different circumstances, and cost is only one part of the decision. This is a neutral comparison, not a claim that one option is always better or cheaper than another.

Questions families ask about cost

How much does home care cost in Suffolk?

Our visiting care starts at £20.94 for a 30-minute visit, £25.35 for 45 minutes and £29.76 for an hour. Specialist care starts from £34 an hour and live-in care from £1,450 a week. Your own price is confirmed in writing after a free assessment at home.

What is included in the rate?

The visit itself, your carer's time, our recruitment, DBS checks, training and insurance, the care plan and its reviews, medication records, office and on-call support for current clients, cover when your regular carer is unavailable, and travel between ordinary scheduled visits.

Is the home assessment free?

Yes. The assessment is free and there is no obligation to go ahead afterwards.

What is the minimum visit?

Thirty minutes. We don't offer 15-minute calls — nobody should be rushed in their own home.

Do weekends and bank holidays cost more?

Any weekend and bank holiday rates are explained clearly in your written quote before care begins, so there is never a surprise on an invoice.

Is mileage charged?

Only where a visit involves taking you out — to an appointment or the shops, for example — and it is always agreed with you in advance. Travel between ordinary scheduled visits is not charged to you.

What is double-up care?

Two carers attending the same visit. A double-up visit is charged as two carers, so twice the single-carer rate.

Why might two carers be needed?

Usually for safe moving and handling — a hoist transfer, for example. It is only ever put in place where an assessment shows it is genuinely necessary for safety.

What is the difference between sleeping and waking nights?

On a sleeping night the carer rests or sleeps in the home and is available for an agreed, limited number of interruptions. On a waking night the carer stays awake and available throughout the agreed night period. Both are quoted individually — please talk to our team about availability.

How is live-in care charged?

Live-in care is charged weekly, from £1,450 a week for one carer. The exact rate depends on the level of support agreed at assessment.

Does live-in care mean one carer works 24 hours?

No. A live-in carer lives in the home and provides the support agreed in your care plan, with protected breaks and proper rest each day. Genuine round-the-clock care needs a rota of carers working shifts, not one person working continuously.

Can Suffolk County Council help?

Possibly. Suffolk County Council can carry out a care needs assessment and a financial assessment. We can explain the process and work alongside social workers, but the council decides what it will fund.

What are Direct Payments?

If the council agrees to fund some or all of your care, Direct Payments let you receive that money and arrange the care yourself — including choosing Harmony as your provider.

Can NHS Continuing Healthcare fund care?

For people with significant ongoing health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may fund care in full. Eligibility is decided by the NHS following its own assessment, not by us.

Can Attendance Allowance contribute?

Attendance Allowance is a non-means-tested benefit for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care. Many families put it towards the cost of care at home. Eligibility is decided by the DWP.

Can a package change later?

Yes, and most do. Needs change, and your plan is reviewed and adjusted with you. Any change to the cost is confirmed with you before it takes effect.

Will the same carers visit?

We build a small, familiar team around each person wherever we can, so you see the same faces week to week. Holiday, sickness and emergencies occasionally mean a different carer, and we tell you when that happens.

How quickly can care begin?

It depends on the package and where you are in Suffolk. Ring the office on 01284 663006 and we'll tell you honestly what we can do and when.

Is there a long-term contract?

No long tie-in. Care can be ended with seven days' notice, and there are no exit fees.

What happens if a regular carer is unavailable?

We arrange cover from within your care team so the visit still happens, and we let you know who is coming.

Will the family receive a written quote?

Yes. After the free assessment you receive an itemised written quotation setting out every rate that applies, with consent from the person receiving care.

How is a free assessment arranged?

Ring 01284 663006, email manager@harmonyhomecaresuffolk.co.uk, or send a care request through the website. We'll arrange a visit at a time that suits you.
